This unique book is dedicated to the memory of the 343 brave firefighters, 23 NYPD, 37 PAPD and Jersey City Police, FBI and Secret Service members, and nearly 3,000 others who were murdered on Sept. 11, 2001.
In 2011 I completed a project I pursued for decades: to write a book about my sometimes nefarious but always extremely rewarding exploits during my 20-year tenure as a FDNY Fire Alarm Dispatcher.
NOTE: All pages in the ‘book’ are double-faced — meaning that the equivalent page numbering in a standard book would be 678 pages!
My personal and street experience as an avid fire buff, FDNY Fire Alarm Dispatcher, news photographer, cameraman, and finally newspaper columnist and journalist began in 1959 and ran through the time of my retirement from FDNY in June 1990 — more than 30 years. It includes some of the most brazen, adventurous, and incredible things imaginable, and then some.
My tenure as a FDNY dispatcher encompassed the busiest and most hectic period in FDNY history: the bombs placed by the Weathermen and the FALN (including the bombing of Fraunces Tavern), the largest building fire in NYC history, the first multiple alarm transmitted for an emergency (not a fire), the Bronx burning literally to the ground… it’s all there, including the dirty politics and behind-the-scene manipulation and bureaucracy that makes New York City so unique.
The ‘book’ is in electronic format on DVD and its chapters are named as follows:

What sets this book apart from others is that it is not solely about firefighters or firefighting; it is also a book about dispatchers and dispatching! And it reveals what heretofore has been untold: the inside stories including the good, the bad, the funny and the unfunny. It’s all there.
